ABOUT PAUL MCMILLAN

Originally from Gold Coast Queensland, Paul studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music whilst also playing casually with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Theatre Orchestra. An AYO season inspired a move to Adelaide to study with Beryl Kimber but after a year that included the Elgar violin concerto, succumbed to peer pressure and finished a Bachelor of Music degree on viola, then Honours with Keith Crellin. 

Paul’s first experience of a viola section was as principal with the South Australian Youth Orchestra, and later the same year principal with AYO, and played for several years as tutti contract with ASO. 

Postgraduate studies at Cologne Hochschule with Rainer Moog followed, whilst contracted as Principal Viola with Remscheider Symphoniker. 

Returning to Australia, Paul played both tutti and principal roles in SSO and OAO before taking up the position of Assistant Principal Viola with MSO in 1997. He has been contracted as Principal Viola with WASO and QSO, and guest principal with TSO, ACO, and MSO. Since 2004 he has been Principal Viola in Orchestra Victoria. 

Recitals have included ABC FM Sunday Live, St Silas, Custom’s House Brisbane, and the SSO Berio Sequenza cycle in Angel Place. 

The violin and the solo sonatas of Bach and Ysaye remain close by, the study of which is always invigorating and a continuing reward.
